problem with not having enough of what i call the lumberjacks there at the mini jack sockets go in the front panel of most of my modules and i think i said that small i'll have to go through the inventory records and figure out what was going on with that idea immediately after the stream and i figured out that first of all the shortage was not as bad as i thought i had done i my brain wasn't working right i guess i had done a completely wrong mental calculation of how many i was using in my modules that i was working on yesterday the situation was the inventory count said i should have forty four and i needed forty two to finish the batch of modules and i was too short so i had actually forty in the count so the the inventory count was off by four jan x and that's not really so surprising given that you know i use these all the time and i typically order them in batches of five hundred and so forth and so on so its not really terribly surprising or distressing that i was missing four but it did mean that if i couldn't have at least two more i couldn't finish this batch modules so bearing in mind that these are pretty critical for a lot of different modules and i really should have a good stock of them i immediately put in a order with newark who are not people i'm really very happy to have to deal with but you know that's that's how that works and the they did actually come through and ship me next day a nice big box of what i sure hope is going to be a box of jack sockets so i am going to unbox this right here on stream and we will confirm that that's really what it is also today this evening actually just a few minutes ago i received my order from mouser which contains parts for the gracious host now you may recall i talked about this on several previous streams i went through a whole big thing with microcontroller chips and i realized that the manufacturer has been consistently saying that they will have their next stock one day one year after the day before i check so like today being what is the twenty eighth it said september twenty seventh two thousand and twenty two that's no good okay and so and stocks seem to be really low with them and with distributor mouser and so forth and so on so i tried to buy all of the microcontroller chips for the gracious host that mouser had which was forty in stock and they ship me thirty two and they said the rest will be available a year after yesterday okay so and anyway then i wasn't feeling too good about that because it really limit my ability to release that new module this piece of paper i just pulled out is just saying that there are supposed to be five hundred of these jacks made in japan with the proper harmonized tariff code and they say they have really shipped me five hundred so we'll see if that's true actually we probably won't i'm not going to sit here and count five hundred on stream but anyway take out some catching the carrier here and this goes off off screen over here because i save the the brown paper packing materials can be reuse and here's a bag of what i hope is five hundred of these jack sockets and you know what given that they are on the districts of individually wrapped they will be easy to count so maybe i should actually go ahead and do that i don't really like having them individually wrapped its wasteful and its annoying when i have to actually use them i have to pull pull them all out of the individual wrappings but it does make counting easier so off screen i don't think you can see it but i'm just fiddling with the opening of his bag here let's see what we got oh and they're nested in another bag alright so here's a strip of five ten fifteen twenty twenty five thirty this local pretty fast thirty five forty forty five fifty fifty five sixty sixty five the seventy seventy five ab eighty five hundred ninety ninety five i'm setting off to the side ones that are naughty strips of five i'll count those later right now i'm at ninety five hello abbott costello the i hundred five hundred and ten hundred and fifteen one hundred twenty one hundred and twenty five one hundred and thirty when thirty five forty one forty five fifty fifty five or sixty sixty five seventy one seventy five one eighty one eighty five one ninety or ninety five two hundred let's go twice at a time two ten two twenty two thirty at two forty two fifty halfway there two sixty oh two seventy the lady yeah what did i say to eighty to eighty five now i definitely don't have hundreds more here what do i have i have two ninety two ninety five two hundred and ninety eight now unless i miss counted which is possible that is way less than it should be in this box and the packing list definitely says that i ordered five hundred and that they think they shipped me five hundred and i have a box a bag here that is labeled saying it contains four twenty five and i have another bag that is labeled without saying five hundred so what's up i think that i mean i'm i'll take out the two that i that i need to use right now but i'm going to have to get after them because they shipped me it looks likely miss two hundred and two these these damn jack sockets they cost a dollar thirty seven each evening quantity and so they they have i shortchanged me by well over two hundred dollars probably closer to three hundred dollars there so that's not good unless there's like another another bag on its way another box on its way or something i don't know what to tell you and we'll see what they have to say about it okay so i guess i'll put the bows in there and let's look at the other box and we'll see how that that one comes now this this is parts the thing is i dunno how far i got on telling my story about the microcontrollers but the point is that after a whole lot of shouting and crying i got what were basically the last of the microcontroller chips suitable for my next project that were available at all there are no more and then i discovered the thing where the wrong chips not they didn't ship me the wrong chips i had ordered the wrong side or during the thirty two k version when i should have ordered the sixty four k version now that's bad because i mean these wrong chips i can't use my product and i probably can't return them either so i'm out a couple of hundred dollars there but the good thing about it is that the rights chips that i should have ordered were easier to obtain they're not in such short supply so i put in an order for one hundred of them which if the module doesn't sell will be a lifetime supply and if it does sell well it'll still be a good long time supply and they should be in this box here along with some other parts that i ordered hoping that i can also use them in that same module product so again i'm pulling off the packing list i don't want to show a packing list on screen because they contain some private information but just a reader out to you that these include this box is supposed to include resettable fuses and voltage regulators and usb connectors clock oscillators some twelve km you sisters just because i was low on those and the microcontrollers so let's see if we can find all of those items in here resettable fuses very nice and voltage regulators here are the twelve k resistors just going to check the yeah the code code on these is brown red black red brown its one of the few palindromic color codes usb connectors which this is a ridiculous way of packing them but okay whatever it doesn't matter and then some of these fun tubes of different components these are the microcontrollers and they are the sixty four k version which is what they ought to be and there are sure to be one hundred of them in there so that's right and these are the clock oscillators to come in a little metal can they're quite cute these are for megahertz clock oscillators the microcontroller actually runs at six well depending how you count either thirty two or sixteen megahertz but the usb peripheral on it requires a forty eight megahertz clock so the way it works and also the the microcontroller clocks have to be accurate or else usb won't work so the way it works is i take these four megahertz clock oscillators the output it that feeds into a pin on the microcontroller its got a pillow built in that multiplies it all the way up to ninety six megahertz then that gets divided back down to forty eight and thirty two and then sixteen to drive for different parts of the chip these chips do have a built in clock oscillator but its not accurate enough to run the usb so you either have to go through this elaborate thing of trimming it which would be a production problem for me i think or else you have to also have have two i use an external clock alright so the box from the mouser is in good order the box from newark is not i i'm really wondering whether its a good idea for me to go ahead and use these these two jack sockets from it i guess i i ok here's what i'll do i will not use these two i will pull a couple of jack sockets out of one of my kids because the thing is if they want me to just pack up the whole thing and ship it back i can't say oh well you shit me to ninety eight but i really needed to so i i'll ship you back to ninety six i and it may be tricky for me to prove just how many they shipped me this is actually really an annoying situation but i i think the thing to do is i'll take one of my kids that i have a relatively good stock of and i'll pull two two jack sockets out of it and that way you know i won't be able to sell that kid until i replace them but i will be able to replace them at such time as either i just said i'm going to use these or work shifts me more or whatever so i will go off screen off screen briefly well i root around here and try to find a kit that i don't think i will need to sell soon and that's what i'll do back in back in a couple okay this middle path kit i've got plenty of middle path kits right now so it doesn't matter if there's one that tends to be pulled out briefly i mean once i replace the the jack socket it'll be good to sell again but go and i will make up a note same this is missing two jack sockets so i should know not to sell them until that is corrected this can go off screen man its always one thing after another okay so hello to be more i am greeting these names that i see enchant an i r c but twitch is still telling me that i have no no viewers so i don't know most likely its just lying and your team did just fine i guess another possibility would be that maybe maybe some of you are this lets the viewer human then then we think not that i'm prejudiced against robots of course alright so better openness thing now i'm just going to do the thing that i did yesterday for the other five and to prepare these front boards with front panels i going on i've said for a long time oh you know the front panel components like jackson to pot the expensive part and this fifteen percent increase in price for the jack sockets only making that all the more true i don't know if its because of like all those ships that are stacked up and off the coast of california right now or what i wouldn't be surprised if that's relevant true to the cost of these because i mean i am ordering from a distributor in the states and and they're supposed to be made in japan so presumably they're coming across an on one of those container ships i don't know if i might be able to get a better price by dealing with the company directly i mean i use a couple thousand of these per year i and last time i tried to contact the lumber company they said oh sorry we you're you're too small potatoes for us we won't deal with you unless you're doing ten thousand dollars us a year of business well that's just a bit bigger than i am but it feels like its its within spitting distance you know i wish i were selling enough modules to to do ten thousand dollars a year of business with the lumber company because that's gotta be better than having to deal with newark i mean like i say that error if that error that of sending me about three hundred when i ordered five hundred that's a significant error that's two to seventy dollars out and i don't know i its quite possible that they're going to say oh i mean this is very its going to be hard for me to prove that that this error was made i can say i paid for five hundred and you ship me three hundred but i and i can show them a photo of the box containing three hundred but all they know is that maybe i removed two hundred alone and then shaking them down for for extras which honestly given this insane price increase i i might be more tempted to do that than i would at other times crap i know offscreen there i just dumped one of the trays of pots into the bin so i probably should stop and put those back in the tray as well you know its one thing after another and once you get into the groove of being pissed off every little thing feels like a big thing you know about whatever the the i like the actual assembly work here you know this is kind of fun and focused and calms me down a bit okay before i solder this i think i'd better deal with that being of pot which can make for a wonderfully exciting tv here i mean here's the trade and most of the parts have fallen out with the tray into the bin so i have to pick up and put them in the bin i mean i spent basically the whole day today waiting for these packages to arrive so even though now is after what would normally be my quitting time i wanted to deal with it and its probably a good thing i did because catching that problem with the jack sockets as soon as possible and so worthwhile thing i dunno i don't watch a lot of other people's unboxing videos but it seems like i've had more than my share where i unbox something and it turns out not to be in good order i dunno do you have other people broadcast that sort of thing too i mean i guess if its like a youtube unboxing video they're not going to or they're going to have the chance to edited and think about whether they want to broadcast it doing it live as i just did i really don't actually know what's in the box until i do broadcast it and when i do everyone's going to see it so i think that makes it more exciting alright these are back in order and now i can solder this just waiting for the cetera to get up to temperature here i mean it is i don't know really how useful it is but he's cute the way this new iron has a digital display that says how many degrees c the tip is for these large front panel connections i've got the the targets set to three hundred and fifty which is the upper limit of what the manufacturer recommends for this solder and really i would usually use a slightly lower temperature maybe three forty because if its too hot the solder doesn't stick well but with a really big connection like this if you need it quite hot just so that the side will melt and the solder isn't necessarily reaching three fifty on the board there is just the tip is targeting three fifty's and i'm also using that wide tip here so that there'll be better better heat conduction i think its sometimes a beginner's mistake to use too small of a tip i mean people want people say oh i'm going to be soldering fine fine pitch stuff i need a pointy tip and some even wanted to be like needle sharp and the trouble is that if the tip is not is very narrow then there's not much area exposed to the solder and so you can't transfer the heat very fast on the other hand if you are soldering very small items you do need a somewhat smaller chip or else its hard to hard to hit just the connection you want and not the thing next to it so a general rule is you want your tip to be roughly on the same size as the connections you're working on this one pretty much exactly matches these these connections for the jack sockets here and then i have a smaller and narrower screwdriver type chip that i use for smaller connections i i was thinking if i get in a big way into surface-mount i may want a third chip there's a style that they call a hoof where its just like a a cylinder that's been cut at an angle so you have sort of an elliptical angled shape at the end and i think that may be better for surface mount than the screwdriver tips that i'm using for google although i think also that a narrow screwdriver tip would probably be ok this mouth but you know one of the nice things about this fancy hecho irony is it can take a whole lot of different trips there are dozens in the catalog so you can you can try different ones and find just the right kind for a given job i've never been enthusiastic about trying it but there's even this heat resistant pad that i think is supposed to be so that you can actually just change the tips while they're still hot i dunno about that i think i might be better off to just let it cool down as i usually do and change the tips that way i mean in a really big factory situation what you do is you have more than one soldering iron with all the different tips you need so that so that you're never spending time changing them also you would have a large factory situation you'd have different steps of the assembly process spread out across different stations in different workers so you have one worker who's always using wide tip and another worker who's always using the narrow i guess i could use the shipping weight of the package as part of my argument for why they didn't ship me enough of these i can certainly weigh like a sample of ten of those jack sockets and multiply it by three hundred and i i know how much the i mean its its recorded a new pss system how much the package wage to a fraction of a pound and this is a big enough error that i think we can say that the based on the the you know the weight that they couldn't possibly have shit near the right number i mean first the first thing off camera i'm going to do another more careful count but when i make my case for why they need to ship me more i can probably use the weight to argue that okay so that is not done and now i can proceed to one alcohol communities modules that i just worked on as well as these other boards i did yesterday turn that off i and that's kind of good because you know i i want to put the glue on these but i should really do it after cleaning them because i don't want to be trying to clean them while there's glue hardening so this sequence does work out alright for washing where's mine i thought i had a bottle of it on the shelf there but i don't seem to so i guess i'm gonna have to go grab that as well back in a few okay here are two almost empty bottles so i guess i will take the one that is closer to mt and finish it along with this reused and that should totally enough the out of the way yeah that's probably going to be enough given that i'm only only doing one board here i mean i'm doing two boards each on six modules but none of them are really big into there's not actually a lot to clean on these i've read that the old time pathologists back in the day we're able to perform autopsies were all wearing evening wear without getting any blood and guts on their clothing i don't think i'm quite at that level when it comes to flux cleaning but you know we do what we can and i'm trying not to get alcohol on any of the stuff that shouldn't have it but just just remove the flux from there the parts were so where it was added in my soldering oh i guess i better get the side connector i mean most of these parts that i'm cleaning or on the back of the board but there's also this bit from the board to board connector that ends up on the front and i would prefer not to have to take separate the board in the panel to get down so i'm coming just from the side here i am probably getting a bit of contamination into the connector but if i discovered that during quality control its pretty easy to remove just plug and unplug the boards a couple of times i was pleased to see my twitter following got up to four ninety eight today which is the highest its ever been be really nice to get that to five hundred even though you don't actually get anything for having five hundred followers its not like there's a prize or anything three see what happens if i hit reload part of the thing is that i don't part of the reason i don't trust the the twitch stream controller thing is that it doesn't always seem to update and it takes forever when it does fortunately it seems like the actual streams go through like a different different system the twitch back end for this much more reliable so your your stream can keep going even when the the controller thing is misbehaving itself the the the the epics for the i remember to get the citing yeah i think i must have just to make sure certainly remember that on this one the the the the the the the the the the last one here for the front board the still have six more of those backgrounds to do the the the the the the that's all different ones now an interesting question its going to be how contaminated is this more southern can i go just go ahead and do the back ones as well with the same stuff i think i think i can it doesn't seem to have left very much residue on my fingers there when i just in the limit to dry so i think this solvent is still fresh enough i can use it on these other boards the are only a couple of spots that need it on here so won't be much in the way that they do added rosin burden so to speak i mean all of all of the all of the flux then washing off before it ends up dissolved into this stuff so it eventually gets loaded up enough that's when i smeared on the board time yeah adding as much as i'm taking away and at that point its not really usable so i guess if i wanted to be really really environmental and frugal the thing to do would be then to distill it but that would require equipment i don't have and dealing with a flammable vapor its probably something that the owners of this house would prefer i not do if they knew about it and then of course there'd also be anybody who saw me doing this would think i was making moonshine which i think may actually be legal in canada anyway but its not something that the general public thinks you are allowed to do so the i actually don't know what the laws are regarding moonshine the so yeah instead of instead of distilling the news to iso propyl alcohol i ended up with just evaporating it but in the interests of being environmentally friendly i try not to do that until its really i've lived its usefulness the which probably will be the case after i finish this batch here the looks like now twitch has decided that i actually do have a viewer good evening i'm not sure i believe twitches kind of draining even you know happier to see it at one then at zero the the the the the the the the the the alright the i'm hearing what sounds like a rather small dog barking off in the distance i need for some series to have one button not sure its that one i think can hearing it from further away the the the okay that's all those washed so no one can put them out to dry and it'll probably be about it for tonight i think that off of off camera i'm gonna want to go through and give those jack sockets another careful count and i have to go grab a paper towel so i'll be back in a sec the give those another careful count and then email these he's assuming i don't just suddenly find another two hundred and two when i do my second count but that doesn't seem very likely i then i'll have to email these people and say hey missing product what are you going to do about it i have told the story before about how with some hundred k resistors they made an error in my favor by shipping me a box of five thousand when it was supposed to be five hundred however that resistors don't cost very much so that error was only worth about forty bucks and this error is going to be hundreds of dollars because the the jack sockets costs so damn much really i mean i last ordered these in january and they went up fifteen percent since then considerably more if i don't get the ones i paid for now they do have this whole thing of how they would like sometimes ship only part of the order and ship the rest later but they're packing slip sure says that that they think they ship for whole thing in this box so yeah unless i can find a drastic difference in when i recount i think something's going to have to be done and i don't know what that will be i've noticed that electronics distributors often seem to think that the solution to every problem whether its counterfeit parts or bad parts or whatever is shipped the whole box back to them but anyway that's where he was we sand and i'm sure it could in some future stream i will give you an action packed recap of whatever ended up being done for now my next scheduled stream is on monday as it says on my profile and if you haven't already i followed me on here please do because i'm trying to get that up to fifty and i'll say i hope you enjoy it and have a good night hm yeah i the the the
