Video from my Web log entry Listening longer to the Mandelbrot Set. It follows from the work of Douady and Hubbard on the connectedness of M that there exists a series adding up sine waves that converges on the boundary of the set; the further work by Jungreis allows calculating the coefficients, and what we end up with is a function that can be turned into audio and describes basically what would be heard by putting a needle on the edge of M and playing the boundary like a phonograph record. This video combines that audio with images of the Mandelbrot Set boundary corresponding to the points currently playing, and human-chosen colour schemes. More discussion in the linked Web log entry.
